What is an Import Export Code & Why is it Mandatory?
The Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is a mandatory 10-digit primary identity number issued electronically by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry. Under Section 7 of the Foreign Trade (Development & Regulation) Act, 1992, no business entity in India can legally execute any import or export operations, declare commercial shipments at customs ports, or transfer international trade capitals without active IEC credentials.
Statutory liabilities and commercial restrictions governing unregistered cross-border trade operations.
| Underlying Offense | Legal Provision | Statutory Fine / Penalty Bracket |
|---|---|---|
| Trade Without IEC | Section 11(2) of FTDR Act | Min โน10,000 up to $5\times$ Goods Value |
| False Custom Declarations | Section 11(3) of FTDR Act | Confiscation + Serious Customs Litigation |

IEC Registration FAQs
No. Once issued, your IEC certificate carries permanent lifetime validity with zero renewal fees. However, to keep your code active, you must electronically update your business profile on the DGFT portal every year between 1st April and 30th June. This annual updation is completely free.
Not necessarily. While having a GSTIN is recommended for business transparency, the DGFT allows sole proprietors and registered entities to apply for and receive their IEC using their PAN and address proofs alone. However, if your transactions are commercial and exceed statutory limits, GSTIN is mandatory.
An Authorized Dealer (AD) Code is a unique 14-digit identifier issued by your bank branch. Obtaining your IEC is only step one; to physically clear cargo through Indian sea or air ports, your AD Code must be programmatically registered on the ICEGATE customs portal. We handle this AD Code linking as a specialized custom add-on.
Under GST rules, exporting services is permissible with a GSTIN and an active Letter of Undertaking (LUT) to execute zero-rated transactions. However, if you wish to claim valuable export benefits, duty drawbacks, or rewards under the Foreign Trade Policy, having an active IEC registration is mandatory.
Failing to update your IEC on the DGFT portal by 30th June will result in the automated deactivation (suspension) of your code on 1st July. Your trade shipments will be frozen at customs. To reactivate it, you must complete the overdue update on the portal; once submitted, the IEC is restored with zero penalty fees.
